Company intelligence / Profile preview
Origin Medsystems was a pioneering medical device company focused on developing innovative tools for minimally invasive surgery. Founded in 1990 by a team including robotic surgery visionary Frederic Moll, the company specialized in balloon dissection technology and specialized instruments for laparoscopic procedures. Its flagship products, such as the OMS Balloon Dissector and the Visiport optical trocar, were instrumental in advancing techniques for hernia repair and endoscopic vessel harvesting. By enabling complex surgeries through smaller incisions, Origin's technologies helped reduce patient trauma and hospital stay durations. The company was acquired by Eli Lilly in 1992 for approximately $100 million and subsequently became a foundational component of Guidant Corporation. Following the acquisition of Guidant by Boston Scientific, the Origin product lines were integrated into the latter's surgical portfolio.
