Orion Multisystems

Orion Multisystems was a technology firm that pioneered the 'personal supercomputer' category, specifically targeting the computational needs of the life sciences, genomics, and drug discovery sectors. Founded in 2003 by a team of former Silicon Graphics (SGI) engineers, the company developed desktop-sized cluster systems that provided high-performance computing (HPC) capabilities directly to individual researchers. Their primary products, the DT-12 and DS-96, were designed to handle complex bioinformatics workloads such as protein folding simulations and large-scale genomic analysis. By offering cluster-level performance in a standard workstation form factor, Orion sought to eliminate the need for centralized data centers for many biotech applications. The company was acquired by DataDirect Networks (DDN) in 2005 to integrate its clustering technology into DDN's storage and computing solutions.
