Ortec Therapeutics

Ortec Therapeutics was a biotechnology company focused on the development of advanced tissue-engineered products for regenerative medicine. The company's flagship product, OrCel, is a bilayered cellular matrix consisting of allogeneic keratinocytes and fibroblasts cultured on a bovine collagen sponge, designed to mimic the structure of human skin. OrCel was primarily developed for the treatment of Recessive Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa (RDEB) and chronic wounds, such as venous stasis ulcers and diabetic foot ulcers. The product received a Humanitarian Device Exemption (HDE) from the FDA for use in EB patients undergoing hand surgery to prevent post-operative adhesions. Operations effectively ceased following the Chapter 7 bankruptcy filing of its parent company, Forticell Bioscience, in 2009.
