Osta Biotechnologies was a South San Francisco-based biopharmaceutical company focused on the discovery and development of small molecule drugs for musculoskeletal and metabolic diseases. The company specialized in Selective Androgen Receptor Modulators (SARMs), a class of compounds designed to provide the anabolic benefits of androgens on bone and muscle while minimizing undesirable effects on other tissues like the prostate or skin. Osta's research platform was instrumental in the early development of treatments for conditions such as osteoporosis and muscle wasting. In May 2004, the company was acquired by GTx, Inc., which integrated Osta's technology and intellectual property into its own pipeline to advance SARM candidates through clinical trials.
