OsteoBiologics (OBI) was a medical technology company specializing in the development of bioabsorbable tissue engineering scaffolds for the repair of musculoskeletal tissues. Founded in 1993 and based in San Antonio, Texas, the company developed a proprietary platform of poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLG) polymers to create three-dimensional structures that support the body's natural healing processes. Its lead products, including the TruFit and TruGraft lines, were designed to treat cartilage and bone defects in joints, particularly in sports medicine applications. The TruFit CB product offered a one-step arthroscopic procedure for repairing bone and articular cartilage defects, addressing a significant unmet need in orthopedic surgery. OBI was acquired by Smith & Nephew in 2006 for approximately $72.3 million to bolster their orthopedic and endoscopy portfolios. The acquisition allowed Smith & Nephew to integrate OBI's innovative scaffold technology into its global sports medicine business.
