Oxford-Emergent Tuberculosis Consortium

The Oxford-Emergent Tuberculosis Consortium (OETC) was a joint venture established in 2008 by the University of Oxford and Emergent BioSolutions to advance the development of the tuberculosis vaccine candidate MVA85A. As a public-private partnership, the consortium aimed to commercialize the first new TB vaccine in nearly a century, designed to boost the immune response initiated by the traditional BCG vaccine. OETC successfully conducted a large-scale Phase 2b efficacy trial in infants in South Africa, marking a significant milestone in global health research. Despite the trial demonstrating the vaccine's safety, it failed to show statistically significant efficacy in preventing TB infection or disease. Consequently, the consortium ceased active development of MVA85A, and the legal entity was dissolved in 2016.
