P.R. Mallory & Co. was a prominent American electronics and electrochemical company founded in 1916 by Philip Rogers Mallory. While primarily known for industrial components and the creation of the Duracell battery brand, the company holds significant historical importance in the healthcare sector for developing the mercury-zinc battery. This specific battery technology provided the first reliable, long-lasting power source necessary for the successful implementation of implantable cardiac pacemakers in the late 1950s. The company's collaboration with medical pioneers like Wilson Greatbatch revolutionized the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias. P.R. Mallory & Co. was acquired by Dart Industries in 1978, and its battery division eventually became the independent Duracell company.
