Pelletier and Caventou was a landmark pharmaceutical partnership established by French chemists Pierre-Joseph Pelletier and Joseph Bienaimé Caventou in the early 19th century. The duo is renowned for the 1820 isolation of quinine from cinchona bark, a discovery that provided the first pure and effective treatment for malaria. Beyond quinine, they isolated several other critical alkaloids including strychnine, brucine, cinchonine, and emetine, laying the foundational principles for modern pharmacology. They established one of the first industrial-scale manufacturing facilities to produce these purified compounds, transitioning the field from traditional herbalism to chemical-based medicine.
