PaineWebber Development Corporation was a specialized investment subsidiary of the brokerage firm PaineWebber, renowned for its role in financing the early biotechnology industry. During the 1980s and 1990s, the firm pioneered the use of Research and Development Limited Partnerships (RDLPs), which provided critical off-balance-sheet funding for emerging biotech companies. These financial vehicles allowed firms such as Genzyme, Centocor, and Amgen to advance high-risk clinical programs without immediate dilution of equity.
