Particle Measuring Systems invented laser particle counting technology in 1972 and has since become the global leader in contamination monitoring solutions for cleanrooms and controlled environments. The company’s products are widely used in pharmaceutical manufacturing, biotechnology, semiconductor fabrication, electronics production, disk drive testing, parenteral sampling of injectables, filter testing for deionized water/process chemicals/gases. They provide both hardware instruments and supporting software/services to ensure regulatory compliance with standards such as EU GMP Annex 1 and ISO 14644. Their technologies are considered industry standard for sensitivity in micro-contamination detection.

The company does not have clinical results or a drug pipeline as it manufactures instrumentation rather than developing therapeutics.

It was acquired by Spectris plc in 1996 but continues to operate under its own brand.
