People of Color in Crisis

People of Color in Crisis (POCIC) was a pioneering community-based organization in New York City focused on HIV/AIDS prevention and support for Black and Latino gay and bisexual men. Established in 1989, the organization emerged as a critical voice for health equity, addressing the specific cultural and social needs of marginalized communities of color during the height of the epidemic. POCIC provided a wide range of services, including HIV testing, peer support groups, and educational workshops designed to reduce the stigma associated with the virus. The organization was particularly noted for its innovative outreach within the House Ball community, utilizing cultural platforms to promote sexual health and wellness. In 2008, POCIC merged with GMHC (Gay Men's Health Crisis) to ensure the sustainability of its programs and expand its reach within the New York metropolitan area.
