Peralta Cancer Research Institute

The Peralta Cancer Research Institute (PCRI) was a pioneering non-profit research organization located in Oakland, California, that was highly influential during the 1970s and 1980s. The institute was globally recognized for its foundational work in breast cancer biology, specifically the development of techniques to isolate and culture human mammary epithelial cells (HMEC) from primary tissue. Under the leadership of prominent scientists like Dr. Adeline Hackett and Dr. Helene Smith, PCRI established critical cell line models that allowed for the study of carcinogenesis in human tissue rather than animal models. The institute's research laid the groundwork for modern molecular studies of breast cancer progression and genomic instability. Following institutional mergers, its research legacy was largely integrated into the California Pacific Medical Center (CPMC) and the broader Sutter Health network.
