Company intelligence / Profile preview
PharmaStem Therapeutics, formerly known as Biocyte Corporation, was a biotechnology company primarily focused on the intellectual property surrounding the collection, cryopreservation, and therapeutic use of umbilical cord blood stem cells. The company held foundational patents for the use of hematopoietic stem cells from neonatal blood to treat various hematologic and genetic disorders. During the early 2000s, PharmaStem was known for its aggressive enforcement of these patents against private cord blood banks through extensive litigation. However, following a series of legal setbacks in 2007 where key patent claims were invalidated by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the company's business model collapsed. It is currently considered inactive and no longer maintains an active presence in the biotechnology sector.
