Philips-Duphar

Philips-Duphar was the pharmaceutical division of the Dutch electronics giant Philips, formed through the consolidation of its chemical and vitamin interests. The company was a pioneer in several therapeutic areas, most notably in psychiatry and women's health. It is credited with the development of fluvoxamine, one of the first selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), and dydrogesterone, a widely used progestogen. In addition to human pharmaceuticals, the company operated significant divisions in veterinary medicine and agricultural chemicals. In 1980, Philips divested the company to the Belgian firm Solvay as part of a strategic shift back to consumer electronics and lighting. Following Solvay's acquisition by Abbott Laboratories in 2010, the former Philips-Duphar product line became part of Abbott's established pharmaceuticals division.
