Company intelligence / Profile preview
PhyCor was a pioneer in the physician practice management (PPM) industry, founded in 1988 and based in Nashville, Tennessee. The company's business model involved acquiring the non-clinical assets of multi-specialty medical groups and providing them with administrative, financial, and information technology services. During the 1990s, PhyCor grew rapidly through aggressive acquisitions, becoming one of the largest managers of physician practices in the United States. At its peak, it managed over 3,500 physicians in more than 50 clinics across the country. However, the company struggled with the integration of its diverse medical groups and the inherent complexities of the PPM model. Financial instability and declining stock value led to a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in 2002, after which the company liquidated its remaining assets.
