Physiognomy Interface Technologies (PIT) was a San Diego-based biotechnology and biometrics company focused on developing advanced facial analysis and recognition systems for medical and security applications. Founded in 1997 by Dr. Michael J. Heller, the company's core technology utilized facial features to assist in biometric identification and the diagnosis of health conditions. The company's 'Physiognomy Interface' platform was designed to map physical facial characteristics to underlying genetic or physiological data. In 1998, the company's assets were acquired by Nanogen, a developer of molecular diagnostic products, to integrate biometric capabilities into their diagnostic platforms. The acquisition was intended to enhance Nanogen's ability to link phenotypic data with genotypic information.
