Planet82 was a South Korean nanotechnology company that gained international notoriety in the mid-2000s for its 'Single Carrier Modulation Photo Detector' (SMPD) technology, which it claimed could capture high-resolution images in near-total darkness. The company also developed 'AccuFat,' a near-infrared body fat meter intended for clinical and consumer healthcare applications, including obesity management and metabolic monitoring. However, the company became the center of one of South Korea's largest stock manipulation scandals when its technological claims were found to be fraudulent or significantly exaggerated. Planet82 was delisted from the KOSDAQ in 2008, and its leadership faced criminal prosecution for fraud and stock manipulation.
