Plextronics

Plextronics was a technology company specializing in the development of conductive polymers and organic electronic materials for Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLEDs) and Organic Photovoltaics (OPVs). Founded in 2002 as a spin-off from Carnegie Mellon University, the company commercialized its proprietary Plexcore technology platform to produce high-performance inks for printed electronics. While its primary commercial focus was on display and solar energy applications, the company also explored the use of its conductive polymers in chemical and biological sensors for defense applications. Plextronics was a pioneer in regioregular polymer synthesis, which significantly improved charge transport in thin-film devices. In 2014, the company was acquired by the Belgian chemical giant Solvay to serve as the foundation for its global organic electronics business. The acquisition allowed Solvay to integrate Plextronics' extensive intellectual property portfolio into its specialty polymers division.
