Poly Implant Prothèses

Poly Implant Prothèses (PIP) was a French medical device company founded in 1991 that specialized in the manufacture of silicone gel breast implants. At its peak, the company was one of the world's largest producers of breast implants, exporting products to over 60 countries for both cosmetic and reconstructive purposes. The company became the center of a global health scandal in 2010 when French authorities discovered that PIP had been using unapproved, industrial-grade silicone instead of medical-grade silicone in its products. This led to significantly higher rupture rates and inflammatory complications for hundreds of thousands of women worldwide. The company was liquidated in 2010, and its founder, Jean-Claude Mas, was later convicted of fraud.
