Possis Medical was a pioneering medical device company focused on the treatment of vascular diseases through mechanical thrombectomy. The company's primary technology, the AngioJet Rheolytic Thrombectomy System, utilized high-velocity saline jets to create a localized vacuum that fragmented and removed blood clots from the body. This system became a leading solution for treating peripheral arterial disease, deep vein thrombosis, and coronary artery blockages. In 2008, Possis Medical was acquired by MEDRAD, a business unit of Bayer HealthCare, for approximately $361 million. Following Bayer's divestiture of its interventional business in 2014, the AngioJet technology became a core component of Boston Scientific's vascular portfolio. The company's innovations significantly advanced the field of interventional radiology and cardiology by providing a safer alternative to systemic thrombolytic drugs.
