Overview

PPL Therapeutics was a pioneering British biotechnology company best known for its collaboration with the Roslin Institute to create Dolly the sheep, the first mammal cloned from an adult cell. The company specialized in "pharming," a process using transgenic livestock to produce complex human therapeutic proteins in their milk. Its primary clinical focus was the development of recombinant alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT) for treating respiratory conditions such as AAT deficiency and cystic fibrosis. Although the company achieved significant scientific milestones in cloning and xenotransplantation, it struggled with clinical trial delays and funding issues. PPL Therapeutics eventually ceased operations and liquidated its assets in 2004, with its legacy continuing through successor entities like Revivicor.
