Pro-Virus

Pro-Virus, Inc. was a Maryland-based biotechnology company focused on the development of interferon-based therapeutics and viral vector technologies. The company was co-founded by prominent virologists, including Dr. Robert Gallo, and aimed to treat complex viral infections and various forms of cancer. Its lead product candidate, Omniferon, was a natural human alpha interferon derived from white blood cells, positioned as a treatment for Hepatitis C. In addition to its interferon work, Pro-Virus developed a proprietary viral vector platform intended for gene therapy applications in HIV/AIDS. In September 2000, the company was acquired by Viragen, Inc. in an all-stock transaction to consolidate their efforts in the interferon market. Following the acquisition, its technologies were integrated into Viragen's pipeline until that company's eventual dissolution.
