Protemix

Protemix was a New Zealand-based biotechnology company focused on developing novel therapies for diabetic complications, specifically targeting the role of copper imbalance in disease progression. The company's lead research centered on the use of copper-chelating agents to address the pathological accumulation of copper in the tissues of diabetic patients. Its lead candidate, a proprietary formulation of trientine dihydrochloride, reached Phase 2 clinical trials for the treatment of diabetic cardiomyopathy and heart failure in patients with type 2 diabetes. Founded by Professor Garth Cooper of the University of Auckland, Protemix's research suggested that restoring copper homeostasis could reverse damage to heart tissue. In 2006, the company was acquired by the U.S. biotech firm Tercica for approximately $28 million in cash and stock. Following Tercica's subsequent acquisition by Ipsen, the development of the Protemix assets was eventually discontinued.
