Protiva Biotherapeutics

Protiva Biotherapeutics was a biotechnology company specializing in the development of lipid nanoparticle (LNP) delivery systems for nucleic acid-based therapeutics. The company is best known for its proprietary Stable Nucleic Acid Lipid Particle (SNALP) technology, which enabled the systemic delivery of small interfering RNA (siRNA) to target tissues. In 2008, Protiva merged with Tekmira Pharmaceuticals, a move that consolidated key intellectual property in the RNA interference (RNAi) space. This technology eventually underpinned the development of Alnylam Pharmaceuticals' Onpattro, the first-ever FDA-approved siRNA drug. Today, the legacy of Protiva's research continues through Arbutus Biopharma, the successor to Tekmira.
