ProtoGene was a pioneering genomics technology company that developed high-throughput DNA synthesis and microarray production systems. The company's core innovation was a proprietary ink-jet printing technology used to synthesize oligonucleotides directly on surfaces, enabling the creation of custom DNA microarrays for genetic analysis. This technology significantly reduced the cost and time required for large-scale genomic studies compared to traditional photolithographic methods. In 2001, ProtoGene was acquired by Agilent Technologies for approximately $210 million, where its technology became a foundational component of Agilent's genomics business unit.
