Quantum Pharmics

Quantum Pharmics was a generic pharmaceutical manufacturer based in Amityville, New York, that was active during the 1980s. Founded in 1983 by former executives of Premo Pharmaceutical Laboratories, the company specialized in producing generic versions of widely prescribed medications, including benzodiazepines and antihypertensives. In 1986, the company was acquired by American Home Products (AHP) as part of its strategy to enter the generic drug market. However, Quantum Pharmics became a central figure in the 1989 generic drug scandal after federal investigations uncovered fraudulent data and misrepresented batch sizes in its Abbreviated New Drug Applications (ANDAs). This led to the suspension of its operations in September 1989 and the eventual withdrawal of approval for its entire product line by the FDA. The company's closure and the subsequent legal actions against its executives were pivotal moments in the history of pharmaceutical regulation in the United States.
