Quorum Sciences was a biotechnology company focused on developing novel antibacterial therapies by targeting quorum sensing, the process by which bacteria communicate to coordinate group behaviors like biofilm formation and virulence. Spun out from the University of Iowa based on the research of Dr. E. Peter Greenberg, the company specifically targeted Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections, which are a major cause of morbidity in patients with cystic fibrosis. In 2005, the company was acquired by Vertex Pharmaceuticals for $80 million to bolster its anti-infective and cystic fibrosis pipeline. The acquisition integrated Quorum's expertise in bacterial signaling into Vertex's broader drug discovery platform. This strategic move allowed Vertex to explore anti-virulence strategies that complement traditional bactericidal approaches.
