R.W. Johnson Pharmaceutical Research Institute

The R.W. Johnson Pharmaceutical Research Institute (RWJPRI) was the primary global drug discovery and development arm of Johnson & Johnson during the 1990s. Formed by consolidating the research capabilities of various J&J units such as Ortho Pharmaceutical and McNeil Pharmaceutical, the institute focused on therapeutic areas including neurology, infectious diseases, and urology. RWJPRI was instrumental in the development and regulatory approval of several major products, most notably the antiepileptic Topamax and the fluoroquinolone antibiotic Levaquin. In 2001, Johnson & Johnson merged RWJPRI with the Janssen Research Foundation to create Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research & Development (J&JPRD), which later evolved into Janssen Research & Development. The institute's legacy remains a cornerstone of J&J's current pharmaceutical portfolio and research infrastructure.
