R.W. Johnson Pharmaceuticals

The R.W. Johnson Pharmaceutical Research Institute (RWJPRI) was the primary research and development arm of Johnson & Johnson's pharmaceutical sector from the late 1980s until the early 2000s. It was established to consolidate the R&D activities of several J&J subsidiaries, including Ortho Pharmaceutical, McNeil Pharmaceutical, Janssen Pharmaceutica, and Cilag. During its operation, the institute was responsible for the clinical development and regulatory approval of several landmark therapies, such as the anemia drug Procrit and the antiepileptic Topamax. RWJPRI maintained significant research facilities in Raritan, New Jersey, and Spring House, Pennsylvania, focusing on therapeutic areas like oncology, immunology, and neuroscience. In 2001, the organization was merged with the Janssen Research Foundation to form Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research & Development, which has since evolved into Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine.
