Raylo Chemicals

Raylo Chemicals was a prominent Canadian contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) specializing in the custom synthesis of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and advanced intermediates. Founded in 1971 by Dr. Raymond Lemieux, the company established a global reputation for its expertise in complex organic chemistry and process scale-up. In 2006, Gilead Sciences acquired Raylo Chemicals from Degussa AG for approximately $133 million to secure the manufacturing supply chain for its antiviral portfolio, including treatments for HIV and Hepatitis B. Following the acquisition, the Edmonton-based facility was integrated into Gilead's operations and renamed Gilead Alberta. Today, the site continues to serve as a critical manufacturing hub for the parent company's global pharmaceutical supply chain.
