RenalAmerica, which operated primarily as Renal Advantage Inc. (RAI), was a leading provider of dialysis services in the United States. Established in 2005 by Michael D. Klein and backed by the private equity firm Welsh, Carson, Anderson & Stowe, the company was initially formed to acquire 70 dialysis centers divested during the DaVita-Gambro merger. Renal Advantage grew rapidly through strategic acquisitions and organic expansion to become the nation's third-largest dialysis provider. The company provided comprehensive care for patients with end-stage renal disease, including hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and laboratory services through its subsidiary, RenaLab. In 2010, Renal Advantage merged with Liberty Dialysis to further consolidate its market position. The combined organization was subsequently acquired by Fresenius Medical Care in 2012 for approximately $1.5 billion.
