Research Institute for Pharmacy and Biochemistry

The Research Institute for Pharmacy and Biochemistry (VÚFB) was the central pharmaceutical research and development organization in the former Czechoslovakia, headquartered in Prague. Founded in 1951, the institute became renowned for its prolific output of original small molecule drugs, a rarity within the Eastern Bloc during the Cold War. Its most significant contributions include the development of the tricyclic antidepressant Prothiaden (dosulepin), the non-selective beta-blocker Trimepranol, and the antihistamine Dithiaden. VÚFB operated a comprehensive R&D pipeline spanning medicinal chemistry, pharmacology, and clinical evaluation. Following the transition to a market economy in the 1990s, the institute was privatized and its core assets and research teams were integrated into Zentiva. Today, VÚFB is recognized as the historical foundation of the modern Czech pharmaceutical industry.
