Retina Implant AG developed pioneering subretinal implants (Alpha IMS and Alpha AMS) for restoring partial vision in patients with retinitis pigmentosa. The Alpha IMS received CE marking in 2013 and the Alpha AMS in 2016. Clinical studies showed some positive outcomes, but overall results did not meet expectations for broad societal impact. The OkuStim system was also developed to slow disease progression using transcorneal electrical stimulation. Despite raising significant funding and achieving regulatory milestones, the company ceased operations in March 2019 due to insufficient clinical benefit realization and challenging reimbursement/regulatory environments[1][2][5].
