Retinal Implant

Retina Implant AG was a pioneering German medical technology company focused on developing subretinal implants to restore vision in patients with degenerative retinal diseases. Founded in 2003 as a spin-off from the University of Tübingen, the company developed the Alpha IMS and Alpha AMS microchips, which were designed to be implanted beneath the retina to stimulate surviving nerve cells. These devices received CE marking in 2013 and 2016, respectively, marking them as the first wireless subretinal electronic implants to gain regulatory approval. Despite significant clinical success and international expansion, the company ceased operations in 2019 due to the challenging regulatory and reimbursement landscape in Europe. Its technology remains a landmark in the field of bionic vision and neural prosthetics.
