Overview

Rosengarten & Sons was a prominent 19th-century American chemical manufacturing company based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Founded in the early 1820s, the firm became a leading producer of medicinal chemicals, most notably quinine and morphine. In 1905, the company merged with its rival, Powers & Weightman, to form the Powers-Weightman-Rosengarten Company. This entity was eventually acquired by Merck & Co. in 1927, making Rosengarten & Sons a foundational ancestor of the modern Merck. The company played a critical role in the development of the American pharmaceutical industry by providing high-quality standardized chemicals.
