Rowell Laboratories

Rowell Laboratories was a family-owned pharmaceutical company based in Baudette, Minnesota, originally founded in 1935. The company gained early prominence for producing vitamin concentrates from burbot fish liver oil before transitioning into a specialized manufacturer of prescription pharmaceuticals. It became well-known for its focus on gastroenterology, dermatology, and endocrinology, notably developing Chenix (chenodiol) for the treatment of gallstones. In 1985, the company was acquired by Solvay Pharmaceuticals, marking a significant consolidation in the mid-sized pharma sector. Today, its legacy continues through the manufacturing facilities in Baudette, which have been operated by successor companies such as Abbott and ANI Pharmaceuticals.
