Safe Blood for China Foundation is an organization established to enhance the safety of the blood supply in China through the implementation of advanced screening technologies. The entity primarily focused on the deployment of Nucleic Acid Testing (NAT) to detect transfusion-transmitted viruses, including HIV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C, which were significant public health concerns in China during the early 2000s. It operated through a combination of non-profit advocacy and a publicly traded corporate arm, Safe Blood for China, Inc., to facilitate the distribution of diagnostic equipment and reagents to Chinese blood centers. The foundation's medical advisory board was notably chaired by Dr. Robert Gallo, a co-discoverer of HIV and a prominent figure in virology. By partnering with the Chinese Ministry of Health, the organization worked to modernize blood screening infrastructure and reduce the risk of infection during the "window period" of traditional testing. Despite its initial success in promoting NAT standards across various Chinese provinces, the company eventually faced financial challenges and is currently considered inactive.
