San Diego Hospice Foundation

San Diego Hospice Foundation was the philanthropic arm of San Diego Hospice and Institute for Palliative Medicine, which was once one of the largest and most prestigious non-profit hospice programs in the United States. Founded in 1977, the organization was a pioneer in the hospice movement, providing comprehensive end-of-life care, grief support, and palliative medicine education. It operated a significant inpatient facility and a renowned fellowship program for physicians specializing in palliative care. Following a federal Medicare audit and subsequent financial distress, the organization filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2013 and ceased operations. Its clinical legacy and many of its programs were eventually transitioned to other regional healthcare providers, including Scripps Health.
