San Diego Medical Services Enterprise

San Diego Medical Services Enterprise (SDMSE) was a long-standing public-private partnership between the City of San Diego and Rural/Metro Corporation, established to provide emergency medical services (EMS) and ambulance transportation. For over a decade, it served as the primary 911 emergency response provider for the San Diego metropolitan area, managing a large fleet of advanced life support ambulances. The organization was recognized for its unique hybrid model, which aimed to combine municipal oversight with the operational efficiencies of a private contractor. SDMSE concluded its primary service role after the City of San Diego transitioned its EMS contracts to other providers, and its private partner, Rural/Metro, was eventually integrated into larger national healthcare transport entities.
