Sandoz Research Institute

Sandoz Research Institute was the primary research and development arm of Sandoz AG, a Swiss pharmaceutical company that merged with Ciba-Geigy in 1996 to form Novartis. The institute was globally recognized for its pioneering work in natural product chemistry and immunology, most notably the discovery of cyclosporine, which revolutionized the field of organ transplantation. Operating major facilities in Vienna, Austria, and East Hanover, New Jersey, the institute focused on developing innovative therapies for central nervous system disorders, cardiovascular health, and infectious diseases. Its legacy includes blockbuster medications such as Clozaril for schizophrenia and Sandostatin for acromegaly. Following the 1996 merger, the institute's facilities and programs were integrated into the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research. While Sandoz was spun off as an independent generics and biosimilars company in 2023, the original Research Institute remains a landmark in the history of pharmaceutical innovation.
