Saviant Pharmaceuticals

Savient Pharmaceuticals was a specialty biopharmaceutical company focused on the development and commercialization of therapeutic products for unmet medical needs, primarily in rheumatology. The company's flagship product was Krystexxa (pegloticase), a PEGylated recombinant uricase enzyme approved for the treatment of chronic gout refractory to conventional therapy. Originally founded as Bio-Technology General Corp. in 1980, the company was a pioneer in recombinant DNA technology before rebranding to Savient in 2003. Despite the clinical success of Krystexxa, the company faced significant commercial hurdles and financial debt, leading to a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in 2013. Its assets were subsequently acquired by Crealta Pharmaceuticals, and the Krystexxa franchise eventually became a core asset for Horizon Therapeutics and later Amgen.
