Company intelligence / Profile preview
Schieffelin & Co. was one of the oldest and most historically significant pharmaceutical companies in the United States, founded in 1781 by Jacob Schieffelin. Based in New York, the company operated for nearly two centuries as a major drug manufacturer and wholesaler, playing a pivotal role in introducing synthetic drugs and ethical pharmaceuticals to the American market. In the 20th century, it became particularly well-known for its dermatological product lines, including the Resinol brand. The company's pharmaceutical operations were eventually acquired by Alcon Laboratories in 1977, while its separate wine and spirits distribution business evolved into a major joint venture that is now part of the Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton (LVMH) group.
