Company intelligence / Profile preview
Sciona was a pioneering nutrigenomics company that focused on providing personalized health and nutrition advice based on individual genetic profiles. Established in 2000, the company developed DNA-based testing kits designed to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that influence how a person's body processes nutrients and responds to environmental factors. Their primary product line, marketed under the MyCell brand, offered consumers tailored recommendations for diet, supplements, and lifestyle changes. While the company initially gained traction through partnerships with major retailers like Walgreens, it eventually faced significant challenges regarding the scientific validation and regulatory oversight of direct-to-consumer genetic testing. Sciona's assets were eventually acquired by Market America in 2008 following a period of intense scrutiny from the GAO and the FDA.
