Selective Genetics was a San Diego-based biotechnology company that pioneered the development of Gene Activated Matrix (GAM) technology for tissue repair and regeneration. The company's proprietary platform involved incorporating plasmid DNA encoding therapeutic proteins into biodegradable matrices, which were then implanted at the site of injury to stimulate localized healing. Their lead program, GAM-5, was designed to treat non-union bone fractures by delivering DNA that expressed a fragment of parathyroid hormone. Despite establishing significant partnerships with orthopedic leaders and advancing candidates into early-stage clinical trials, the company faced financial challenges during a market downturn. Selective Genetics ultimately ceased operations and filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy liquidation in 2001.
