Semzyme Inc. was a pioneering nanobiotechnology company founded in 2001 by Dr. Angela Belcher and Dr. Evelyn Hu to commercialize a revolutionary biomimetic approach to material synthesis. The company utilized genetically engineered viruses, specifically the M13 bacteriophage, as biological templates to direct the assembly of inorganic materials such as semiconductors, metallic nanowires, and magnetic particles. This "bottom-up" fabrication method allowed for the creation of nanoscale electronic components under environmentally friendly conditions, bypassing the extreme temperatures and harsh chemicals of traditional semiconductor manufacturing. In 2004, Semzyme was renamed Cambrios Technologies, which went on to become a leader in silver nanowire-based transparent conductors for touchscreens and flexible displays.
