Sequana Medical’s alfapump® is a fully implantable, wireless device that automatically transfers excess abdominal fluid into the bladder for natural elimination. It is CE-marked in Europe and, as of December 2024, received FDA approval as the first active implantable medical device for recurrent or refractory ascites due to liver cirrhosis in the US. Over 1000 devices have been implanted globally. The company’s DSR® therapy is still under clinical investigation with promising early results published from RED DESERT, SAHARA, and MOJAVE studies showing improved diuretic response and reduced need for loop diuretics in heart failure patients.
