SERAVAC BIOTECH

Seravac Biotech was a prominent South African biotechnology company focused on the development and large-scale manufacture of high-purity enzymes for the diagnostic and pharmaceutical industries. The company specialized in extracting and purifying enzymes from animal and plant tissues, becoming a major global supplier of critical components such as horseradish peroxidase and uricase. In 2003, Seravac was acquired by Genzyme Corporation to bolster its Genzyme Diagnostics business unit. Following the acquisition of Genzyme Diagnostics by Sekisui Chemical in 2011, the company's operations were integrated into Sekisui Diagnostics. The Cape Town-based facility remains a key site for the production of specialized enzymes used in clinical chemistry and in vitro diagnostics.
