Company intelligence / Profile preview
Shanghai BioExplorer was a specialized preclinical contract research organization (CRO) based in Shanghai, China, that provided toxicology and pharmacology services to the global pharmaceutical industry. Founded as part of the ShangPharma group, it was a key early player in the Chinese outsourcing sector alongside its sister company, Shanghai ChemPartner. In 2007, the company entered into a landmark joint venture with Charles River Laboratories to form Charles River Laboratories Preclinical Services – China, establishing one of the first international-standard GLP facilities in the region. The company's assets and operations were subsequently integrated into Charles River's global network, helping to bridge the gap between Chinese research capabilities and international regulatory standards. It is recognized for its role in enabling Western pharmaceutical companies to conduct high-quality, regulatory-compliant drug development work in China.
