Sierra Neuropharmaceuticals was a biopharmaceutical company based in Aurora, Colorado, that specialized in the development of direct-to-brain drug delivery systems for severe central nervous system (CNS) disorders. Founded in 2005 as a spin-off from the University of Colorado, the company developed a proprietary platform to reformulate existing small molecule therapeutics for administration via surgically implanted pumps and catheters. This method was designed to bypass the blood-brain barrier, potentially increasing therapeutic efficacy while minimizing systemic side effects for conditions such as refractory epilepsy, schizophrenia, and treatment-resistant depression. Despite securing $21.5 million in Series A funding in 2008 from prominent investors like HealthCare Ventures and Morgenthaler Ventures, the company faced financial difficulties and underwent liquidation in 2009.
