Company intelligence / Profile preview
Sigma-Tau Finanziaria was the primary holding company for the Sigma-Tau Group, a prominent Italian pharmaceutical organization with a significant global presence in the rare disease and specialty care sectors. Founded in 1957 by Claudio Cavazza, the company became a pioneer in the study of carnitine and its applications in metabolic and cardiovascular health. Its portfolio included essential treatments for orphan diseases, such as Adagen and Cystadane, as well as the innovative antimalarial drug Eurartesim. In 2015, the company entered into a major merger with Alfa Wassermann to form Alfasigma, creating one of the largest pharmaceutical entities in Italy. The merger combined Sigma-Tau's research-driven pipeline with Alfa Wassermann's strong commercial footprint in the gastrointestinal and vascular markets.
